Day 02

Phnom Penh – Ban Lung (B/L/D) (G)

To reach Banlung by land we may take almost whole day to travel by bus. But this is the only way to travel by at the moment as we don’t have flight. Banlung is the most beautiful part of Cambodia, Banlung - Ratanakiri. In this part province are living mostly minority tribes. About 80% Of the people who are living here are not Khmer-Cambodian but Lao, Tampuan, Jorai, Chinese, Vietnamese or Kreung. In Ratanakiri we will be joined by a local guide who will show us the most beautiful places of Ratanakiri. By car and by foot we will explore the beautiful untouched nature. In the afternoon we will take a look at the Cha Ung waterfall and at the end of the day you can take a refreshing dive in the crystal clear water of the Yaklom Volcano Lake. We will spend the night in wooden cottages in the middle of the forest.

Day 03

Ban Lung (B/L/D) (G)

Together with a local guide we will visit today several small villages and hill tribes. By 4-wheel drive and seated on an elephant we will explore the beautiful untouched nature. Crossing the jungle we will definitely meet some nomadic tribes. There are more then 20 of these nomadic tribes, by Cambodian people known as: Khmer Loeu, or highlanders, each with there own language and culture. Besides these tribes we will also visit some spectacular waterfalls.

Day 04

Ban Lung Tour (B/L/D) (G)

Ever saw cashew or rubber trees? No? Well, today you are going to. Today we will visit a cashew and rubber field and a small village where the people are making a living out of gem mining. Everywhere around you, you can see holes with a dept of approximately 15 meters. Maybe it is your lucky day and you are able to find a few gem stones. The Sean Lae (7-steps) Waterfall, which we will visit next, has only been discovered recently and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Cambodia.

Day 05

Ban Lung – Stung Treng (B/L/D) (G)

Before we will leave to Stung Treng we will first visit a local market. At this colorful market you can find al your required souvenirs of Ratanakiri. In the afternoon we will arrive in Stung Treng. After checking in at the hotel you will have enough free time to explore this lovely village, situated at the Sekong River. Located only 40 kilometers from Laos and hardly visited by tourists, this city still has its own authentic atmosphere.

Accommodation at:

Day 06

Stung Treng – Phteah Pkoh Village (B/L/D) (G)

After breakfast we will depart to Kampong Cham either by boat or bus. Hopefully there will be enough water for a boat trip because traveling on the Mekong River is a great experience. At arrival in Kampong Cham we will continue the tour by minibus with a visit to Wat Nokor.

This temple was built in the 13th century with stones out of sand and still remains in a good condition. At Phnom Proh you have the opportunity to feed some monkeys. Late in the afternoon we will head to Phteah Kpoh, a small village surrounded by rice fields where tourists are a rarity.

Dinner and overnight stay will be at a local family.

Day 07

Phteah Pkoh Village (B/L/D) (G)

The local village people are not used to foreigners riding around on an oxcart. They will be very surprised and greet you with a big smile and wave you goodbye. Riding around through rice fields and some small villages we will also visit a local school. As the children are very poor they will certainly appreciate small gifts like a pencil or any kind of school supplies. After saying goodbye to local villagers we will go to Tek Chaa. At the lake we will have lunch in small bamboo cottages. It is even possible to take a ride on one of the, probably only two in Cambodia, water bikes. An adventures ride on a motorbike through banana fields will bring us to the cold water springs. Consider yourself lucky because this beautiful area is not mentioned in any guidebook at all. In this oases look a like surrounding you can enjoy the crystal clear water and the experience of walking around through the jungle. On route to Phnom Penh we will take a break at Skun. This village is famous because of their specialty: spiders! Fried or cooked with some salt or herbs it is the favorite snack of the local people. Especially the legs are supposed to taste very good.

Day 08

Phteah Pkoh Village – Siem Reap (B/L) (G)

Today we are leaving out of the area of adventure for an amazing heritage of Cambodia in Siem Reap province. On the first day arrival in Siem Reap town, you will have your own leisure time. You can manage your own trip by rent a bike and make your own tour for a small city tour or visit local markets. But of course if you are in the mood for a relaxed day at the swimming pool, well, the choice is yours.

Day 09

Siem Reap (B/L) (G)

One of the highlights of this tour is of course a visit to Angkor, the largest temple complex in the world. With the temples of Angkor, Cambodia has something to offer that none of its neighbours can rival. To visit all temples will take us a week. Unfortunately we don't have that much time so we will visit with an experienced guide only the major and most impressive temples like Angkor Thom, Baphoun, Bayon, Elephant Terrace and of course the most famous one, Angkor Wat. You will be surprised by the unmatched architecture of these temples. This temple complex was discovered by the Frenchman Henri Mouhout in 1860 and was totally overwhelmed by the impressive jungle. Most temples are still in the same condition as when they were discovered in 1860. You can still feel the mysterious atmosphere as you probably witnessed in the movie Tombraider, which was partly filmed at this location. We will make this Angkor tour not with luxury touring cars but in Cambodian style, by TukTuk.

Upon leaving Vietnam, if you still have some local money, you can change them back to foreign currency with your passport and the exchange memos given by the banks or money exchange counters. So please keep those exchange memos well whenever you change money.

What should we bring along on our trip to Vietnam?

It is best to travel light in Vietnam. Onemedium sized bag and a day pack will provide more than enough room to carry everything you'll need, and enough space for the things you'll buy in Vietnam.

There are lots of consumer goods in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, so do not worry about running out of something. If you do forget something you can easily find it here. Before you leave home complete the following checklist:

- Lightweight and quick dry clothing is most appropriate for the summer months, and warmer  clothing for the winter months. As well, sun hat, swim suit, ultra lightweight rain jacket.

- Travel Documents: Passport, Visa, Travel Insurance, Air Tickets (you should scan them and email them to yourself in case you loose them).

- Health requirements, medications, and travel insurance arranged.

- Flashlight, alarm clock, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, small personal first aid kit, personal toiletries.

- Money: US dollars or travelers cheques and/ or credit card(s).

- Raincoat or umbrella, good hiking shoes are needed for all Footprint trekking trips.

- Camera with charger, extra batteries, and memory cards.

Are there any restrictions on the type of luggage that we bring? Domestic airlines have their weight restrictions. On most domestic and low-cost airlines You may only have one suitcase or backpack, with a maximum weight of 20kg, and one piece of hand luggage, with a maximum weight of (5 – 7)kg. An extra charge for overweight is applied.

There is no actual limit on our trips, but we would suggest you travel light with one suitcase or backpack and one small daypack or small bag which you can access during the day and carry items like your camera, drinking water, toilet paper, hat, sunscreen, etc.

It is essential that you have a lock for each piece of luggage. Without one, railway and airline staff and some hotels may refuse to handle it.

What is the best type of clothing we should bring?

Here is a short checklist of best type of clothing you should bring:

- Shorts and comfortable pants;

- Shirts, t-shirts and maybe some long sleeves shirts (for regions with mosquitos like the Mekong delta);

- Swim suits (for the beaches and Halong Bay);

- Good sandles as well as good shoes if trekking.

Nevertheless, it will really depend on where you travel to, when you plan on travelling, and what you plan on doing. Please note that the weather can be very cold during the winter in the Northern Vietnam (Nov to Mar) and quite cool in the central highlands (Dalat). You will need to bring a good jacket along for this time of the year, the avarage temperature is about 15 oC, but can get as cold as 3 oC.

Tip: Do not worry if you do not pack enough clothes or forget something because you can buy in Vietnam.

Shopping in Vietnam

Shopping in VietnamMany tourists can’t help but throw themselvesShopping in Vietnam head-first into shopping while in Vietnam. Why? Probably the variety of quality goods and the tempting prices have a lot to do with it. Many low-budget travelers considered Vietnam a heavenly place because in many shopping situations they can bargain the prices down to as much as a third of the original cost.

The list of Vietnamese bargains is seemingly endless and features bespoke tailoring and the national dress, the 'ao dai' from high-quality silk and many other types of material and textiles while many shoppers cannot get enough of the local handicraft, art and jewelry.

How to bargain?

Bargain is not common in some countries, but in Vietnam it really is. In Vietnam, bargaining isalways worthwhile. Yet, it is not always due to the fact that the local have a great deal of time and very little money. Bargaining is part of Vietnamese culture as through bargaining people communicate with others, create and build up their relationship, not to mention a form of entertainment.

Rule - 1: It's like the monster ride at the amusement park. If you're not having fun, get off.

Rule - 2: Don't bargain with the first person who approaches you (i.e., when looking for a taxi at the airport.) In general the further you go from the center of action, the cheaper the price.

Rule - 3: Don't be afraid to use walking away as a bargaining tool. You can always come back.

Rule - 4: Don't let pride get in the way of coming back (or Rule #3 is useless).

Rule - 5: If you really want something and the price isn't coming down, give in gracefully. (It's that pride thing again.)

Rule - 6: Don't always assume you're getting ripped off just because you're in a third-world country. Sometimes the price they're asking is the real one.

Rule - 7: Bargaining is a time/ money tradeoff. If you're in a hurry, be prepared to pay for it.

Rule - 8: Ask (Vietnamese) fellow shoppers the price of an item before you begin bargaining.

Rule - 9: Always carry small bills. Otherwise all that work is likely to be for nothing.

Rule - 10: Always bargain in native currency. Conventional wisdom says anyone who has dollars can afford to spend them.

Rule - 11: If possible, keep going back to the same person until you've gotten to know him/ her. Most third world countries have a name for this kind of relationship. The deal is that you offer your business on a regular basis and the seller responds by saving you their best tomatoes

Rule - 12: No matter what your parents told you, when you're bargaining it's perfectly okay to lie
